Tutorial for Cat Silhouette Bookmark

 

I have created this super-fast knitting pattern for the Cat Silhouette Bookmark in 2015 and it has been my most downloaded knitting pattern for some time, passing over the knitting pattern for Minions.  

Even though this pattern is available for free, I still try to help people if they contact me and ask for help. One of the most asked questions I receive about this, and my other bookmark patterns is how to knit the bookmark in the round. So, I decided to create a small photo tutorial which shows how I do that. 

I have spent one hour knitting the bookmark and since I have some leftover yarn, I created a new bookmark for the Cat Silhouette working flat in garter stitch. I will type up the notes (it is slightly different then just use a half amount of stitches given for the bookmark in the round).

The new pattern, which is written for flat knitting and have an additional updated version of the original Cat bookmark in the round as a bonus is available on:

Here is the picture tutorial for the original Cat Silhouette Bookmark 

Start with cast on the number of stitches, I prefer to use the long tail CO.

After I knit the first round, I join the stitches to continue to work in the round. With two double pointed needles, each holding half of the stitches, and using the third needle to knit.

Following the knitting pattern round after round. 

After the Cat Silhouette is finished, continue with the ears.

Then, make the I-cord tail.

In about an hour, the Cat Silhouette Bookmark is done.

Work in progress IV and Summer Reading Program

Library donation 2017

Every year our library have summer reading program for children to encourage reading. Children read and for every book they read (or the smaller one had read to them) they earn a raffle ticket. Volunteers and local businesses provides the prices children can win.

This year I gave the toys pictured above. I hope that whomever win the toys will love them. Sometimes when I visit the library I love to see the tickets in the container next to my knitted toys. It makes me feel happy to see that children are still interested in an old fashioned toys rather then electronics.

I was hoping to finish the minions and donate them as well, since the movie Despicable Me 3 is about to be released at the end of this month. But as you can see from the picture bellow, the minions are still work in progress......

Mystery KAL and Minions

I have to admit I love mystery KAL.  It is fun, exciting and mysterious. In a way it makes me feel like a child again. Knitting Pattern for Minion Pencil Box

Minion Pencil Box

My last post was about minions. I have mentioned that I was asked to knit few minion toys, which made me think about what else I could make. Also we have only few weeks left before it's back to school, and the two thoughts combined together resulted in this pencil box.

I have to admit, I had a great help with the sewing part. My mom is visiting us and since she is a great quilter she knows how to work miracles with the sewing machine.

Minions Pencil Box:

Finished size: Pencil box is 9” (23cm) wide and 5 ½” (15cm) tall.

Yarn: 1 ball of medium worsted yarn in yellow and blue (for my minion pencil box I used Bernat Handicrafter cotton in lemon and blueberry color), remnants of white, black and grey colored yarn.

         

Recommended Needles size: US # 5/3.75mm and Double pointed needles (DPN) US #5/3.75mm (set of 5).

Notions: Yarn needle, scissors, stitch marker, stitch holder, fabric 4 rectangles about 10" x 7" (26cm x 18cm), yellow zipper 9"(23cm) long.

Abbreviations:  

SSK= slip stitch, slip stitch, and knit the 2 stitches together, this decreases 2 stitches to 1 stitch.

KFB = Knit in front and back of the same stitch, this creates 2 stitches from 1stitch.
K2tog = knit two stitches together, this decreases two stitches to one stitch.
P = Purl
K= Knit
Y = Yellow
B = Blue

Gauge: 17sts & 27 rows = 4” in stockinette stitches.

 

Instructions:

This pencil box is knitted flat in stockinette (knit and purl rows). The eyes are knitted separately and sewn on.

Cast on 48sts in blue color.

Row 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15: Purl (48sts total)

Row 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14: Knit (48sts total). Attach the yellow yarn and continue with both yarns.

Row 16, 18, 20, 22, 24: K7Y, K10B, K14Y, K10B, K7Y (48sts total)

Row 17, 19, 21, 23, 25: P7Y, P10B, P14Y, P10B, P7Y (48sts total)

Row 26: K5Y, K2B, K10Y, K2B, K10Y, K2B, K10Y, K2B, K5Y (48sts total)

Row 27: P3Y, P2B, P14Y, P2B, P6Y, P2B, P14Y, P2B, P3Y (48sts total)
Row 28: K1Y, K2B, K18Y, K2B, K2Y, K2B, K18Y, K2B, K1Y (48sts total)
Row 29: P1B, P22Y, P2B, P22Y, P1B (48sts total). Cut off the blue yarn and continue with yellow yarn only.
Row 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54: Knit (48sts total)
Row 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45, 47, 49, 51, 53, 55: Purl (48sts total)
Row 56: Knit and bind off.
Fold the knitted piece in half and sew together the sides.

Goggles:
The grey sides of goggles:
With the grey yarn cast on 5sts. I-cord for approximately 6.5" (16cm). Cut the yarn, leaving long enough tail, and thread the tail on a yarn needle. Pull the end through the remaining stitches on needle, gather up and close the hole. Sew together the beginning and end of I-cord. This creates one circle. Repeat for second circle.

White patch :
With the white yarn cast on 5sts

Row 1: Knit (5sts total)
Row 2: Purl (5sts total)
Row 3: KFB, Knit 3, KFB (7sts total)
Row 4: Purl (7sts total)
Row 5: KFB, Knit 5, KFB (9sts total)
Row 6: Purl (9sts total)
Row 7: Knit (9sts total)
Row 8: Purl (9sts total)
Row 9: SSK, Knit 5, K2tog (7sts total)
Row 10: Purl (7sts total)
Row 11: SSK, Knit3, K2tog (5sts total)
Row 12: Purl (5sts total)
Row 13: Knit and cast off.
Sew the grey circle to the white patch. If the goggles are double eyed, sew the two grey circles together on one side. Use the picture as a guide. Embroider the eyes with black yarn.

The black belt for the goggles:
With the black yarn cast on 6sts. Make one I-cord approximately 6.5" (16.cm), and second I-cord approximately 1"(3cm). Please make sure to measure the length by putting the belt and goggles around the Minions head. Cut the yarn, leaving long enough tail, and thread the tail on a yarn needle. Pull the end through the remaining stitches on needle, gather up and close the hole. Sew the beginning of the I-cord to one side of the google circles. Repeat for the second side. Sew the goggles to the face of the Minion using the picture as a guide.

Finishing:  With the black yarn embroider the smile on the face using the picture as a guide. Weave in all ends.
Use the four rectangles of fabric. (if making two pockets), otherwise use only two rectangles. Sew the three sides together. Insert the fabric inside the knitted piece. Attach the zipper to the opening and sew the zipper to the knitted and fabric layer. Before sewing on the sewing machine tuck the ends of the zipper between the layer of fabric and knitting for a neat finish. 
I would suggest to leave the sewing of the black belt as the last thing. If you sew the black belt before it might be too thick for your sewing machine (it was for mine and we had to replace the broken needle)

 

Fill the pencil box with everything your artist may need.

Minions everywhere.....

Field trip

I was asked to knit some minions. It was a nice distraction from all of the other knitting that I have been working on in the past few weeks.

I just couldn't help it, I had to assemble the entire group together for a nice picture. It reminds me of a class on a field trip.

Minion Phone Cover

When my knitted minions photo was included on the Despicable Me FB page last week, I had to return to the adorable minions.
I was asked to knit minion phone cover. And because I had the yellow and blue yarn out, I knitted hat, and then I knitted the evil minion hat. 
The knitting patterns for all three things are being test knitted at the moment, and will be available next month.

Feeling Famous......

....at least for a moment until the reality kicks in.

Please, let me explain.
Few days ago I have received a message from a marketing company in U.K. They asked for my permission to use this picture of my knitted minions as a part of one of their promotion activities prior to DVD release of the movie "Despicable Me 2".
 As a thank you for doing that, they would provide a link to the original post (my blog). A great exposure to audience that might not know about my blog otherwise.
For a moment I envisioned thousands of readers suddenly exploring my small corner on the Internet where I share my ideas, knitting patterns, and sometimes my thoughts. For that brief moment I felt as if I am someone famous. But, then reality kicked in and I realized that it is only in my head, and actually I would not want to be famous and experience all that comes with fame.
However I wouldn't mind to have more visitors to my blog, and more people knitting my critters and perhaps give them away to make this world a little bit better, by being generous, and kind, and caring for each other, outside of our comfort zone.

My brief moment of feeling famous can be viewed here.

In a  strange twist of ways the Internet sometime works, the other knitted minion was inspired by my Knitting Pattern for Minions, which the author kindly provided the link to.

And then, I saw another pattern on the Internet, which the person claimed as their own creation, but it looks exactly as my Knitting Pattern for Minions , including the number of stitches, and rows and techniques for body, arms, legs, goggles, overalls etc.

I know that I cannot prevent something like this from happening, the same way I cannot prevent somebody else from trying to sell my knitting patterns that I have provided for free on other web sites and actually charge money for it, but this makes me feel sad and disappointed. Sad for those people who would pay money for something that I offered for free. Disappointed for behavior of those people who would do that. And I have to keep asking myself, Why would anyone steel someone else's work and claim it's their own work, without  properly crediting the authors.
What else would people like this do, to make a little bit of profit from someone else's work?

I know that the world is not perfect and that bad things happen, but if we all tried to be nicer, kinder, more courteous, and respectful then the world might be a better place to live and share.

I couldn't help myself. I just had to make the evil version of Minion's inspired Tablet or I-pad cover.

For this project you will need approximately 1 ball each of medium worsted yarn in purple (I used Caron Simply Soft Grape # 9610 )  and black yarn, 1 ball of Fun Fur or other novelty type of yarn in color matching the body of the minion (optional) for hair, remnants of white, black and grey colored yarn, two buttons.

Tablet cover is 8 ¼” (21cm) wide and 11 ½” (29cm) long.
I-pad cover is 8 ¼” (21cm) wide and 9 ½” (24cm) long.

Minions again

I must admit. However cute and adorable the minions are, I have reached the point of being tired of knitting them. It doesn't mean that I will never return to the cute minions, but for a while I need a break from yarn in yellow, blue, black and purple. All those unfulfilled requests for minions must wait for a while. I need to hold and work with different colored yarn for a while.

You will need less than a ball of sport to medium weight yarn in purple color (I used Caron Simply Soft Grape # 9610), 1 ball of Fun Fur or other novelty type of yarn in color matching the body of the minion (optional) for hair, less than a ball of black yarn. Also remnants of grey yarn and white yarn. The finished minion is approximately 9" (22cm) tall.

The knitting pattern for Minions Tablet or I-pad cover is available.

You will need approximately 1 ball of yellow and less then 1 ball of blue yarn, also remnants of black, white, and grey yarn all in worsted weight. Also you will need two buttons.

More Minions

Minions 2

As I mentioned in my previous post, for me this month is all about minions. After I finished the two minion toys I wanted to make more, but also I wanted to create something new. 
I thought of our current obsessions with anything electronic and it just seemed appropriate to make a tablet cover inspired by minions.
The knitting pattern is almost done and should be available for everyone within the next few days.

And of course my next project is going to be the purple minion. I have already picked the yarn and I cannot wait to cast on.

Finished Toy Size: 9" (22cm) tall

This is Part 2 of the Knitting Pattern for Minions.

Knitting Pattern for Minions - Part 1






Yarn: Less than a ball of sport to medium weight yarn (yellow color, or color of your choice), remnants of black yarn, grey yarn and white yarn. Also small amount of blue color yarn.
Recommended Needle Size: DPN US #3/32.5mm (set of 5)
Notions: Yarn needle, crochet hook, scissors, stitch marker, stitch holders, polyester fiberfill (1 small bag)
Abbreviations: KFB = Knit in front and back of the same st, it creates 2sts from 1st.
SSK = slip st, slip st and knit the 2sts together. This decrease 2sts to 1st.
K2tog = knit 2sts together, this decrease 2sts to 1st.
I -cord = the sts are knitted from first needle to second needle, do not turn the needle around, just push the sts to beginning of the needle and knit again. This technique makes tube.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Overalls Pants 
First Leg: With blue yarn and three double pointed needles cast on 16sts (5 or 6sts per needle). Place the stitch marker on the first st and begin working in the round.
Row 1 - 10: Knit around (16sts total), transfer the sts to 2 needles (or use the stitch holders), 8sts per needle. Cut the yarn leaving long enough tail.
Second Leg: With blue yarn and three double pointed needles cast on 16sts (5 or 6sts per needle). Place the stitch marker on the first st and begin working in the round.
Row 1 - 10: Knit around (16sts total), transfer the sts to 2 needles, 8sts per needle.
Row 11: Knit 8sts from the first needle for second leg, knit 8sts from the first needle for the first leg, continue with the next 8sts from the first leg and finish the row with 8sts from the second leg (32sts total)
Row 12: *KFB, Knit 3; repeat from the * around, 10sts per needle (40sts total)
Row 13: Knit around (40sts total)
Row 14: *KFB, Knit 4; repeat from * around, 12sts per needle (48sts total)
Row 15 - 22: Knit around (48sts total)
Row 23: Knit 18, Knit and cast off 12, Knit 12, Knit and cast off 6
Row 24: Knit and cast off 6. At this point you will have 12sts at front and 12sts in the back of work. Leave the 12 sts at the back of work, and continue to work with the 12sts in the front of work using stockinette stitch.
Row 24, 26, 28, 30, 32: Knit 12sts
Row25, 27, 29, 31, 33: Purl 12sts
Row 34: Knit and cast off 10sts, leaving last 2sts, I-cord the 2sts for approximately 4" (10cm). Cut the yarn leaving long enough tail, and thread the tail on a yarn needle. Pull the end through the remaining stitches on needle, gather up and close the hole.
Reattach the yarn to the 12 sts at the back of the work, and repeat the rows 24 - 34. When making the I-cord make sure it's on the opposite side of the I-cord from the front of the work. Sew the ends of the I-cords to the top of overalls, and close the hole in between the legs by sewing it together. Weave in all the ends.

Goggles:
The grey sides of goggles:
With the grey yarn cast on 5sts. I-cord for approximately 4.5" (12cm). Cut the yarn, leaving long enough tail, and thread the tail on a yarn needle. Pull the end through the remaining stitches on needle, gather up and close the hole.. Sew together the beginning and end of I-cord. This creates one circle. Repeat for second circle.

White patch:
With the white yarn and two DPN needles cast on 10sts. (5sts per needle), knit in the round.
Row 1: Knit around (10sts total)
Row 2: KFB, Knit 3, KFB,KFB, Knit 3, KFB (14sts total)
Row 3: KFB, Knit 5, KFB, KFB, Knit 5, KFB (18sts total)
Row 4 - 5: Knit around (18sts total)
Row 6: SSK, Knit 5, K2tog, SSK, Knit 5, K2tog (14sts total)
Row 7: SSK, Knit3, K2tog, SSK, Knit 3, K2tog (10sts total)
Row 8: Knit around (10sts total)
Row 9: Knit and cast off from both needles at the same time.
Sew the grey circle to the white patch. If the goggles are double eyed, sew the two grey circles together on one side. Use the picture as a guide. Embroider the eyes with black yarn.

The black belt for the goggles:
With the black yarn cast on 6sts. I-cord for approximately 7" (17cm). If single eyed google the length will be slightly longer. Please make sure to measure the length by putting the belt and goggles around the Minions head. Cut the yarn, leaving long enough tail, and thread the tail on a yarn needle. Pull the end through the remaining stitches on needle, gather up and close the hole. sew the beginning of the I-cord to one side of the google circles, and the other end to the other side. Sew the goggles to the face of the Minion using the picture as a guide.

Hat:
With 3DPN and a yarn  cast on 48sts. (16sts per needle). Place the stitch marker on the first st and begin working in the round.
Row 1 - 7: Knit around (48sts total)
Row 8: *SSK, Knit 14; repeat from * around, 15sts per needle (45sts total)
Row 9: *SSK, Knit 13; repeat from * around, 14sts per needle (42sts total)
Row 10: *SSK, Knit 12; repeat from * around, 13sts per needle (39sts total)
Row 11: *SSK, Knit 11; repeat from * around, 12sts per needle (36sts total)
Row 12: *SSK, Knit 10; repeat from * around, 11sts per needle (33sts total)
Row 13: *SSK, Knit 9; repeat from * around, 10sts per needle (30sts total)
Row 14: *SSK, Knit 3; repeat from * around, 8sts per needle (24sts total)
Row 15: *SSK, Knit 2; repeat from * around, 6sts per needle (18sts total)
Row 16: *SSK, Knit 1; repeat from * around, 4sts per needle (12sts total)
Row 17: SSK all around, 2sts per needle (6sts total)
Row 18: SSK all around (3sts total). Continue I-cord till the length of I-cord is approximately 4" long. Cut the yarn, leaving long enough tail, and thread the tail on a yarn needle. Pull the end through the remaining stitches on needle, gather up and close the hole. Make a knot with the I-cord.

Finishing: With the black yarn embroider the smile on Minions face. With the black yarn make some hair.

Row 1: Knit around (6sts total)
Row 2: KFB all around, 4sts per needle (12sts total)
Row 3: Knit around (12sts total)
Row 4: KFB all around, 8sts per needle (24sts total)
Row 5: Knit around (24sts total)
Row 6: *KFB, Knit 1; repeat from * around, 12sts per needle (36sts total)
Row 7: Knit around (36sts total)
Row 8: *KFB, Knit 2; repeat from * around, 16sts per needle (48sts total)
Row 9 - 48: Knit around (48sts total). Thread the tail from the cast on stitches on a yarn needle. Stitch through all of the cast on stitches, pull up tight to close the hole, and stitch to secure. Begin to stuff the body with fiberfill.
Row 49: *SSK, Knit 6; repeat from * around, 14sts per needle (42sts total)

Row 31 - 32: Knit around (15sts total)
Row 33: *SSK, Knit 3; repeat from * around, 4sts per needle (12sts total)
Row 34: *SSK, Knit 2; repeat from * around, 3sts per needle (9sts total) Lightly stuff the hand part of arm.
Row 35: *SSK, Knit 1; repeat from * around, 2sts per needle (6sts total) Cut the yarn, leaving long enough tail, and thread the end on a yarn needle. Pull the end through the remaining stitches on needles, gather up and close the hole, stitch to secure. Sew the arms on the side of Minion, in the bottom half, using the picture as a guide.

Legs (make 2): With the yarn and 3DPN cast on 12sts (4sts per needle). Place a stitch marker and begin working in the round.
Row 1 - 10: Knit around (12sts total). Change the yellow color to black yarn.
Row 11: Knit around (12sts total). Stuff the leg with fiberfill.
Row 12: Knit 3, KFB, KFB,KFB,KFB,KFB,KFB, Knit 3 (18sts total)
Row 13: Knit 7, KFB,KFB,KFB,KFB, Knit 7 (22sts total)
Row 14: Knit 9, KFB,KFB,KFB,KFB, Knit 9 (26sts total)
Row 15 - 16: Knit around (26sts total) Finish stuffing the leg.
Row 17: Divide the 26sts to 2 needles, 13sts per needle and knit and cast off from both DPN needles at the same time. Sew the legs on the bottom part of the Minions body using the picture as a guide, make sure that the both legs are pointing at the same direction.

Finishing: At this point you can embroider face on your minion, or use safety eyes. And you are done, or you can follow the Part 2 of this pattern.

Minions......

Our Minion finally got a friend........

If life would happen according to plans, this second minion would be finished around Christmas time. By now there would be few more minions, the pattern would be written, edited and test knitted. And I would write this post about the new knitting pattern.

But life tends to change the plans.

The pattern is still not written, or edited or test knitted.

It will be done. I am sure about that. I am just not sure about when that's going to happen. I hope, it will be very soon.

Minions for everyone

A while back we watched the movie "Despicable Me". It was a huge hit in my household.

I personally loved the little minions. I definitively could use a whole bunch of them to help around the house.

The knitting pattern for the minions and scarf will be available (hopefully) soon.
