Knitting Pattern for Owl tablet case

Owl Tablet Cover

I have been asked to knit an owl tablet cover in brown colors, with a zipper opening on two sides.
We even found a matching fabric in a fabric store to put inside and to make the case stronger we have inserted cut out piece of plastic folder between the two layers. I must admit, it was challenge to sew the layers together with the plastic in place and to make the corner on the zipper opening. I was happy that my mom was the one doing the sewing, while I only did the knitting and figuring out the pattern.

 

 

Owl Tablet Case:by Stana D.S. 

Finished size: Tablet Case is 7” (18cm) x 9” (23cm).

 

Yarn: Cascade 220 Superwash Sport in # 818 (Mocha) and # 873 ( Extra Crème Caffe) each about 65 - 70 yards.

Total yardage is about 130 - 140 yards, and remnants of white, dark grey, and black colored yarn. 



Recommended Needles size: US # 5/3.75mm.

Notions: Yarn needle, scissors, fabric 2 rectangles about 10" x 8" (26cm x 21cm), if using the plastic insert two pieces of plastic folder slightly smaller than 7" (18cm) x  9"(23cm),  brown colored zipper 16"(40cm) long.

Abbreviations:  

SSK= slip stitch, slip stitch, and knit the 2 stitches together, this decreases 2 stitches to 1 stitch.

KFB = Knit in front and back of the same stitch, this creates 2 stitches from 1 stitch.
K2tog = knit 2 stitches together, this decreases 2 stitches to 1 stitch.

K3tog = knit 3 stitches together, this decreases 3 stitches to 1 stitch.

Gauge: 21sts& 27 rows = 4” in stockinette stitches.

Instructions:
This tablet case is knitted flat in stockinette (knit and purl rows). With stripes change every four rows.

Cast on 80sts.
Row 1, and every odd row until row 67: Purl (80sts total)

Row 2, and every even row until row 66: Knit (80sts total).
Row 68: Knit and bind off.
Fold the knitted piece in half and sew together the bind off side.

 

White patch  (make 2):

With the white yarn cast on 5sts

Row 1: Purl (5sts total)
Row 2: KFB, Knit 3, KFB (7sts total)
Row 3: Purl (7sts total)
Row 4: KFB, Knit 5, KFB (9sts total)
Row 5: Purl (9sts total)
Row 6: Knit (9sts total)
Row 7: Purl (9sts total)
Row 8: SSK, Knit 5, K2tog (7sts total)
Row 9: Purl (7sts total)
Row 10: SSK, Knit3, K2tog (5sts total)
Row 11: Purl (5sts total)
Row 12: Knit and cast off.
Sew the white patches to the tablet case using the picture as a guide. Embroider the iris of the eyes  with black yarn. 

 

Beak:

With the dark grey yarn cast on 7sts.

Row 1: Knit (7sts total)

Row 2: Purl (7sts total)

Row 3: SSK, Knit 3, K2tog (5sts total)

Row 4: Knit (5sts total)

Row 5: SSK, Knit 1, K2tog (3sts total)

Row 6: Knit (3sts total)

Row 7: K3tog. Cut the yarn, leaving long enough tail and thread the end on a yarn needle. Pull the end through the remaining st on needle. Sew the beak to the tablet case using the picture as a guide.

 

 

 

Finishing: 

Weave in all ends.
Use the two rectangles of fabric. Sew the two sides together. Insert the fabric inside the knitted piece. If using the plastic insert it between the two layers. Attach the zipper to the opening and sew the zipper to the knitted and fabric layer. To make the corner we have made a small cut in the zipper fabric to make it easier to sew it in the corner. Before sewing on the sewing machine tuck the ends of the zipper between the layer of fabric and knitting for a neat finish. 

With the yarn sew across the two corners to create two ears.

Reading and knitting.....

Reading and knitting are two of my favorite things to do. If I could I would rather be knitting instead of house chores, but that is living in a dreamland rather than reality.

Anyway, I love our local library. We are very frequent visitors and know the librarians by their name. During the summer the children section of the library offers summer reading program. Children are encouraged to read and for every book they read or every hour they read they receive a raffle ticket. Local families and businesses donate prizes and children can place their raffle tickets to containers next to the prices on display. Each week the winners are randomly picked and the recipients receive their price.

Every year I donate some of my knitted toys. This year I gave two Miranda's the owl in pink and blue as well as Owlie tablet and phone cover. The other day we visited the library and the container next to my Miranda was filled with raffle tickets. It is a great feeling to see how many avid readers are in the library, and even more how many of the readers want to own my knitted Miranda.

I have purchased two skeins of yarn to knit up my owl for the contest and in this picture you can see that I was able to knit two Miranda the owl as well as the Owlie Tablet and Phone cover, and I still have some yarn left.

Owlie Tablet and Phone Cover

One of the groups on Ravelry that I belong to has a contest. We have to create a knitted or crochet owl toy and take an interesting or funny picture of our finished project. This is not the picture I took for the contest, but the theme inspired me to create this cute Owlie tablet and phone cover.

After the pattern is test knitted I will make it available for everyone. The dilemma I have at the moment is should it be a free or paid for knitting pattern? I am inclining to make it free, but then I think about the time it took to knit the samples, write the pattern, and all other expenses involved in producing a good knitting pattern. It is very difficult decision. I value my time and work, yet I know that sometimes it is hard to justify the charge, when free patterns are just a few clicks away.

Knitting Pattern for Minion's tablet or I-pad cover evil version

I couldn't help myself. I just had to make the evil version of Minion's inspired Tablet or I-pad cover.

For this project you will need approximately 1 ball each of medium worsted yarn in purple (I used Caron Simply Soft Grape # 9610 )  and black yarn, 1 ball of Fun Fur or other novelty type of yarn in color matching the body of the minion (optional) for hair, remnants of white, black and grey colored yarn, two buttons.

Tablet cover is 8 ¼” (21cm) wide and 11 ½” (29cm) long.
I-pad cover is 8 ¼” (21cm) wide and 9 ½” (24cm) long.

Minions again

Minions

I must admit. However cute and adorable the minions are, I have reached the point of being tired of knitting them. It doesn't mean that I will never return to the cute minions, but for a while I need a break from yarn in yellow, blue, black and purple. All those unfulfilled requests for minions must wait for a while. I need to hold and work with different colored yarn for a while.

You will need approximately 1 ball of yellow and less then 1 ball of blue yarn, also remnants of black, white, and grey yarn all in worsted weight. Also you will need two buttons.

Tablet cover is 8 ¼” (21cm) wide and 11 ½” (29cm) long.

I-pad cover is 8 ¼” (21cm) wide and 9 ½” (24cm) long.

More Minions

Minions 2

As I mentioned in my previous post, for me this month is all about minions. After I finished the two minion toys I wanted to make more, but also I wanted to create something new. 
I thought of our current obsessions with anything electronic and it just seemed appropriate to make a tablet cover inspired by minions.
The knitting pattern is almost done and should be available for everyone within the next few days.

And of course my next project is going to be the purple minion. I have already picked the yarn and I cannot wait to cast on.
