The Headaches of Medical Bills....

a photo of two knitted foxes, a knitted frog and a paper in the background

Another one just arrived yesterday.

This year has been rather stressful, and my knitting has been mostly on hold. I cannot find the energy or time to knit. The stress of having my husband out of work and without any income since January is not helping. Earlier this month, when I went to an Urgent Care with a chest pain and was refused to be seen, I had to go to ER instead. I was worried about the chest pain, not the medical bills at that time.

Now the medical bills started arriving. Even though we are lucky to have a health insurance through my full-time job, it's a rather high deductible insurance and we have to pay most of the bills anyway. The unbelievable high medical bills here in the USA force people to create GoFundMe pages as they struggle to pay their regular bills and the medical bills as well, while sometimes they cannot even work. A good friend of mine is dealing with the uncertainty of his child's long recovery from a serious car accident as well as the devastating medical bills the prolonged hospital stay at an ICU will cost. I am truly at loss on how he must feel. Below is the link to my friend's child GoFundMe page.

My friend's child GoFundMe Page

I still hope to host the toy mystery KAL sometimes soon. It might take a bit longer than I anticipated, but there are more than 300 other knitting pattern that I have created over the years, which you can either purchase or are available as free patterns. See all the places where you can buy my patterns on my website. Stana's Critters Etc

As always, I am grateful for any purchase you make as it helps me to continue to create one stitch at time.

Thank you.

Around the World Stitch -a-long and some other Work in progress.

I took this picture the last time I was traveling by airplane. It has been in the summer of 2019 and I was returning home from visiting my family in Europe. It seems like a lifetime ago. I do not know if and when I will be able to visit my mom again. I hope that it will be this year, but who knows what is still ahead of us. I have realized that these days I travel a lot in my dreams. I am visiting places that are close to my heart.

Somehow I have stumbled upon an event named Around the world stitch-a-long. It is an independent knitwear designers knit a long and it is happening all around the world. I am a bit late talking about it here as the fun already started on February 15th. But the whole thing is running through March 28th so there is still plenty of time to participate and win some prizes.

The event is filled with knitting, crocheting, games, and variety of prizes. In the group on Ravelry the chat is filled with traditions, recipes and chat with people from all around the world.

Here is the link to the group on Ravelry: Around the World Stitch-a-long

and here is the link to the big bundle of participating designers also from all around the world: Participating designers

also the event is hosted on Instagram Around the World SAL

One of the participating designers and organizers is Ranee Mueller from Arabian Knits. I had a pleasure get to know her a bit through this Interview with a designer  I did two years ago.

Join us for this fun event and learn about the other participating designers. In a way it's like traveling to far away places and learn something about people from those different places.

In December 2020, after I published Paw Print Heart knitting pattern I announced that for every purchased pattern in the month of December I will donate $1 to our local animal shelter. In December I have sold  9 patterns for the Paw Print Heart. I decided to donate $1 for all of my patterns sold in December. That was 35 patterns and therefore $35. I have rounded that up to $50 and made a check and dropped it at the local animal shelter.

In December I was approached by a Canadian yarn website and asked if they can sell my knitting pattern for Rockefeller, the owl on their website.

Here is the link to the pattern on the Canadian Yarn website: Link here

Thank you for reading and visiting.

Keep on knitting, one stitch at time.....

Snowmen Garland, Paw Print Pin Cushion and Paw Print Heart

Over the past week I have published three knitting patterns. They are all quick and wonderful last minute knitted gifts. Each of these takes about two hours or less of knitting.  And all you need is less then 50 yards / 46 meters of yarn. The patterns suggest worsted weight yarn, but it will work in any yarn weight. The size of the finished item will be different from the samples done in worsted weight yarn, and you will have to adjust the needle size accordingly to the yarn weight.

The first and the most easy of the three patterns is Snowman Garland:

You can purchase the pattern on Ravelry: My Designer Page

or clicking on this button, which takes you to Ravelry:

or you can buy it on Lovecraft website, or on Payhip

My second pattern is Paw Print Pin Cushion:

You can purchase the pattern on Ravelry:

or clicking on this button, which takes you to Ravelry:

or you can buy it on Lovecraft website, or on Payhip

My third pattern is the most difficult of these three as it requires stranded knitting, increases, and decreases working in the round, but it's also my favorite one of the three:

Paw Print Heart

You can purchase the pattern on Ravelry:

or clicking on this button, which takes you to Ravelry:

or you can buy it on Lovecraft website, or on Payhip, or in my Etsy store

Here is a picture of our dog with the Paw Print Hearts. He has been an inspiration behind this pattern and as a thank you I will donate $1 from each pattern purchase during the month of December to our local animal shelter. Our dog has arrived from an animal shelter and he has been a wonderful addition to our family.

Thank you for visiting, and thank you for buying my knitting patterns.

Generosity, GAL, Fasten off Yarn 2020, and life

This is the time of year when people tend to be more generous and caring. In the knitwear designer world it is also the time of year when a wonderful event Gift-a-long is happening on Ravelry.

GAL 2020 officially started yesterday with a week long sale event, after the sale event is over the gift-a-long continues until the end of the year. There are games to play, prizes to win, and more. You can join the event on Ravelry Indie Design Gift-a-long I am also participating as a designer.  Stana's Critters Etc on Ravelry.

In June of this year (I think, but I might be wrong) Ravelry website was redesigned and the new Ravelry website was live. Apparently there have been some issues with the new design. Due to this a new event was created  Fasten Off Yarn-a-long  This event starts today with another sale time and conitnues with knit a long, games, prizes and all, but is held completely off Ravelry. I am also participating as a designer in this event, you can see the patterns here: Stana's Critters Etc

As a knitter I will try to participate and knit something from other designer's patterns. I have quite a few favorites and I just need to decide what to make.

Life is rather interesting. We all are trying to cope with the effects the pandemic had on our lives in the past several months. I am not sure what the future is holding for us, humanity and the world, but I try to be optimistic. That is rather difficult at times when I scroll through the news and read them. I personally choose each and every day to see something good and something positive in my life. For example my heart shaped rocks pictures and collection. It started with an unexpected chance discovery of a heart shaped rock on a path I have taken so many times before, yet I never saw that heart shaped rock before that day, few years ago. Since that day I have seen so many heart shaped rocks, and clouds and other objects that it might be an ordinary. Yet I choose to see each and every heart shape I see as a message from the Universe that life is good, and that there is hope for all of us.

One of my latest knitting patterns is named Paw Print Heart. It is a combination of heart shape and a paw print on it. You can see the samples with my dog. At the moment the pattern is available in my Etsy store, Payhip store, and on Lovecraft. I will add the pattern to Ravelry next week.

Each year I choose a charity to donate some money. This year I will donate locally to our animal shelter. It is not the only charitable organization I donate, as I am an active member of Friends of the library and I support them a lot. For every pattern purchase of the Paw Print Heart I will donate $1 to the animal shelter. I guess it is my way of being thankful for the gift of our dog who has arrived from an animal shelter and has been a loved member of our family.

Life as a work in progress

Usually I try to keep posts on this blog about knitting. Occasionally I write about life.

Scraptastic Cowl

This is one of those posts. I am not a native English speaker. I learned the language at school, and even now so many years after I moved across the ocean to be with the man I fell in love, I still make mistakes when speaking, or writing. I do apologize for them. I try my best.

Over the years I wrote few blog posts about life events, if you wish to explore them read some of them here:

Why I make

A friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer. This is devastating news to hear. What is even more devastating is the fact that she will be paying for some of her medical bills and she needs to still pay her living bills as well. She has set up a fundraiser to raise money to help her go through this difficult time of her life. I decided to donated all of the money I made from selling my knitting patterns during the month of February. I was hoping for a good month, so I would be able to give her a lot. Unfortunately it has been an average month, see the picture bellow what I have actually made during the month of February.

I hope that by sharing her fundraising page here might bring her some more money to help her through this.
Here is the link to her

In my knitting life things are improving. My elbow is much better and I can knit again. I try to work on the Scraptastic Pillow, which apparently is tested by my dog for comfort and usability, even unfinished.

Over in my group on Ravelry we have the March KAL, working on Odie, the sea otter. You can join us for the fun.

Work in progress I.

WIP
Since my last blog post I have been busy.

I was overwhelmed by the amount of visitors and kindness of people who left comments, or send me messages. For three days, when the coupon code was active I felt like my blog went viral, in comparison with the normal activity I can see.
Thank you everyone for your kind words, for your visits, and I hope that there will be plenty of knitted projects created from my patterns.

In the real life we had few snowstorms over here and a lot of snow. On our way to skiing resort this past weekend we saw this sign along the road. It was funny. Although I enjoy skiing and winter, the constant snow shoveling wreck havoc on my lower back. I kind of hope for spring to come soon.

Winter fun?
Otto, the owl was my first toy mystery KAL for this year. The two finished samples I have donated to our local library for fun gift away for the children. Here is the picture from the coloring contest gift away.
Otto, the owl coloring contest
At the moment we have another fun gift away at the children library. This time they can win Celeste the cat.

Here are the two Celeste, made out of scrap cotton yarn:

I had been asked for a rabbit for the next fun contest. Here is my WIP.
Rabbit
And here is a picture of my future big knitting project. I just received the yarn, and will start working on it as soon as my rabbit is finished. In a way I am returning to the beginning of my knitting life. One of my first knitting projects was a sweater for myself, when I was I think 13 or 14 years old. I made it up completely, without using a pattern. I had that sweater for years, and loved it. After I have knitted many more sweaters, mostly created from my sketches and drawn ideas. I think it's about time to create a sweater pattern, something I have not done yet.

Reflections

Reflections
Reflections on life.....
I started this blog post few weeks ago. Then I stopped and left it unfinished.
I wasn't sure what I would like to include in this post.
There are so many things that keep floating through my mind lately, and I am not sure where to start and where to end.
The first image is of my dog. We went for a hike few weeks ago and I took this photo. I posted it on my personal FB and a friend suggested that I should submit the image as she thought its beautiful. I haven't done anything serious in photography field for years. To be more specific, I haven't done anything since my pregnancy. I guess the whole motherhood somehow kept me occupied enough for years. It still keeps busy, but since the DVT and PE that happened to me last year in March I slowed down and started to reflect more on what I have close to my heart.
The thing about DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and PE (pulmonary embolism) is that it can kill you. Somewhere I read statistics that every 10th person dies from it. I guess I have been lucky twice so far. My first DVT was at the time when I had two weeks old baby, and then the next one was last year in March. Somehow the fact that I have this ticking bomb inside my veins is frightening and can keep me awake at nights. Yet I try to live my life and continue with day to day tasks and chores.
My hikes in the woods with the puppy, which arrived less than a month after my DVT and PE episode keep me busy in a positive way.
I spend about two to three hours a day walking. Most of the time I love it, except when it rains a lot and is windy. The other thing I dislike about these hikes is the higher exposure to the ticks. I have found them even in January!
Also the hikes in the woods take away my knitting time and my social media time. I wish it would take away my house choir time, but somehow that doesn't seem to be happening.
In any case, I try to carry on with my work on designing new and interesting knitting patterns, and I hope to continue for many years to come.
The picture bellow was taken on another hike with my dog and the kid. I have been collecting heart shaped stones for long time and sometimes I see the heart shape image in another places. When I captured this photo I saw only one heart shape, but then I looked at it again and saw another one,  dark and light halves put together creating an almost perfect heart shape. Can you see it too?

Hearts
Seven years ago I wrote first blog post. I must say it has been an interesting journey. Google statistic tells me that almost 750 000 people have visited this corner of the Internet. That is amazing. I hope that those who stopped by were inspired by my work and perhaps will keep returning to see what is new on my adventurous journey through life.
Here are few links I thought to share with you:

As a thank you for the blog visitors I have created a discount for my knitting patterns. You can get one free pattern of your choice from my pattern collection by using the coupon code Life in the checkout. The promotion runs until Monday March 5th 2018 midnight Eastern US time.

Work in progress IV and Summer Reading Program

Library donation 2017
Every year our library have summer reading program for children to encourage reading. Children read and for every book they read (or the smaller one had read to them) they earn a raffle ticket. Volunteers and local businesses provides the prices children can win.

This year I gave the toys pictured above. I hope that whomever win the toys will love them. Sometimes when I visit the library I love to see the tickets in the container next to my knitted toys. It makes me feel happy to see that children are still interested in an old fashioned toys rather then electronics.

I was hoping to finish the minions and donate them as well, since the movie Despicable Me 3 is about to be released at the end of this month. But as you can see from the picture bellow, the minions are still work in progress......

Reading and knitting.....

Reading and knitting are two of my favorite things to do. If I could I would rather be knitting instead of house chores, but that is living in a dreamland rather than reality.

Anyway, I love our local library. We are very frequent visitors and know the librarians by their name. During the summer the children section of the library offers summer reading program. Children are encouraged to read and for every book they read or every hour they read they receive a raffle ticket. Local families and businesses donate prizes and children can place their raffle tickets to containers next to the prices on display. Each week the winners are randomly picked and the recipients receive their price.

Every year I donate some of my knitted toys. This year I gave two Miranda's the owl in pink and blue as well as Owlie tablet and phone cover. The other day we visited the library and the container next to my Miranda was filled with raffle tickets. It is a great feeling to see how many avid readers are in the library, and even more how many of the readers want to own my knitted Miranda.

Thank you for visiting.

Lego Men Crayons

Lego Men Crayons
I was busy with a slightly different project. For the past week or so, with some help, we peeled old crayons, broke them into small chucks, fit them inside a form, and baked them in the oven. It was a long project, but in the end we have created an army of Lego men.

Now, you may wonder why on Earth would we need this much of crayons. Well, our local library is trying to raise money to pay for renovation. The money the town set aside to finance the renovation is not enough to cover the cost of renovation and the Friends of the Library and many other people are trying hard to raise enough money to cover the difference. It has been a long process and the goal to reach is still far away.
My child wanted to help since library is our favorite place to visit. Therefore we began  the melting and baking. The crayons were nicely wrapped and are now on display and available to buy at our small library. The only thing left is to hope that people will buy the bags with colorful crayons and the money will help at least a bit to reach the goal.

Thank you for visiting.

Donation to our library

This is my third year that I donated knitted toys to our library for summer reading raffle. Children read, and for ever fifteen minutes they read they earn one raffle ticket. There are various prices on display each week during the summer reading program. Children can place their raffle tickets to a box next to the price and the winners are announced each week.

I wonder, which avid reader will win these knitted toys.

Thank you for visiting.

Table display
A dear friend of mine asked me to participate in an event organized by Buddhist center in western Connecticut. The event was devoted to animals.

I had a table to display my knitted toys, and flyers for anyone interested to take home. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon in a serene location. It felt like a treat.

Miranda, the owl
After the tornadoes destroyed parts of Oklahoma everyone wanted to reach out and help.

During the past two weeks, Suburban knits put together e-book with twenty knitting patterns in order to raise money for Oklahoma charity Other Options, Inc.
In the e-book among many others beautiful designs are two of my knitting patterns Miranda, the owl and Maillie, the travelling monster.

All of the profits from the sale of this e-book will be given to charitable organization Other Options, Inc.

These toys travel.....

......to a new home.
This is a group picture of my first charity donation this year. I have learned about project Christmas in February for children in Pine Ridge in South Dakota on Ravelry at the RAM group.
I could not resist the opportunity to send some of my toys to a new home.
It is an adventure on it's own, to wrap the toys in a box and send them out, wondering what the people will think when they open the box and see the toys. All the possibilities that I can imagine. In reality I may never find out what the recipients think when they see the toys, I can just hope that they like the toys and will take care of them........

Thank you for visiting.

Knitting Pattern for Miranda, the owl

Miranda, the owl started as a donation for my local library. Each summer the library has summer reading program for children and they receive for every 15 minutes of reading raffle ticket.
People donate prizes and children can put their tickets to boxes for a chance to win that particular prize.  My knitted owls were some of the prizes the children could win every week.
The librarians told me that the owls were among the children's favorites.

Now everyone has a chance to knit their own Miranda, the owl. The knitting pattern is available to purchase on Ravelry or by clicking on this button.

Miranda, is approximately 8'(20cm) tall.  The toy is knitted in the rounds, the pattern contains charts for the fair isle/stranded color work technique and written instructions with photographs. You will need less then a ball of two colors each, two funky buttons for the eys or safety eyes and small amount of yarn for the beak.

Happy Knitting.

Hope Garden

I give away most of my knitted toys. Many of them are for various charities and I always wondered how much of a difference can one toy make. I never really knew the answer to this, until I saw a picture from Bonnie Jacobs of all the monsters she collected for Hope Garden. I have learned about her charitable collection of Monsters for Hope Gardens via Ravelry. I have sent few of my knitted toys thinking it's a nice thing to do. But it was when she posted the photo of her entire collection  that I have realised how much joy this can create. She delivered 83 funky, handmade and smiling monsters to the children.

The photo of the Monsters for Hope Gardens is by Bonnie Jacobs. The toys around are waiting for their new home and will travel soon someplace to share hope and smiles.

May all of you find the joy and love to share. Peace to all.

Thank you for visiting.
