Knitting Pattern for Kitty Pencil Box

Kitty Pencil Box
Last week while we were at store picking up zipper for Sunny, the pencil box monster I saw the cutest kitty fabric. I could not resist and had to buy it.

These two pencil boxes were knitted because of the fabric. Now, I am not sure if everyone would agree with me that it is a cute kitty resembling pencil box. I have been told that it looks like a rabbit, a rat, a mouse, and many other animals. Sometimes the interpretation is different from what the creator had in mind.

I still have to knit a rabbit version of this pencil box with long floppy ears. I am curious what the result will be like... a rabbit or something else?

This pencil box is knitted flat in stockinette (knit and purl rows).

Row 2, and every even row until row 54: Knit (50sts total).
Row 56: Knit and bind off.
Fold the knitted piece in half and sew together the sides.

Tail: Cast on 3sts and knit I-cord approximately 6" (16cm) long. Bind off. Sew the tail to the back side of the pencil box using the picture as a guide.

Finishing:  With the black and white yarn embroider the eyes, nose, mouth, and whiskers on the face using the picture as a guide. Weave in all ends.
Use the two rectangles of fabric. Sew the three sides together. Insert the fabric inside the knitted piece. Attach the zipper to the opening and sew the zipper to the knitted and fabric layer. Before sewing on the sewing machine tuck the ends of the zipper between the layer of fabric and knitting for a neat finish.
With the yarn sew across the two corners to create two ears.
